vyāghrī­jātakam

purā bodhisattvaḥ śiṣyeṇa saha parvate cacāra.

bodhisattvaḥ parvate caran dadarśa vyāghrīm. sa vyāghrīṃ parvata­gahvare dadarśa.

gahvare vyāghrī vyāghra­bālān ajanayat. vyāghrī tu khāditum iyeṣa. vyāghrī janayitvā vyāghra­bālān khāditum iyeṣa parvata­gahvare.

vyāghrī na kiṃcit khādyaṃ dadarśa gahvare parvatasya. tayā tu khāditavyam. tasmāt vyāghrī sva­bālān khāditum iyeṣa. vyāghrī sva­bālān khādyam iva dadarśa.

bodhisattvo duḥkhitāṃ vyāghrīṃ dadarśa. bodhisattvas tāṃ duḥkhitāṃ vyāghrīṃ dṛṣṭvā mahatīṃ kṛpāṃ jagāma.

bodhisattvaḥ kṛpāṃ gataḥ śiṣyam etad abravīt:

paśya, śiṣya! vyāghrī parvata­gahvare. eṣā vyāghrī khāditum icchati. mahatīṃ cikhādiṣāṃ gatā. mahatyā cikhādiṣayā sva­bālān khādet.

tv anyat khādyaṃ khāditvā sva­bālān na khāditum icchet. etena vyāghrī sva­bālān na khādiṣyati. anyat khādyam anveṣṭavyam.

gaccha, śiṣya! anyat khādyam anveṣṭuṃ gaccha. aham anyat khādyam anveṣṭuṃ gamiṣyāmi.

śiṣyo 'nyat khādyam anveṣṭuṃ jagāma vyāghryai.

kintu bodhisattvo na khādyam anveṣṭuṃ jagāma. bodhisattvo 'cintayat:

kasmād anyat khādyam anveṣṭavyam? mama śarīram. kasmād anyasya śarīram anveṣṭavyam?

vyāghrī mama śarīraṃ khāditvā sva­bālān na khāditum icchet. etena na sva­bālān khādiṣyati vyāghrī. etena vyāghrī vyāghra­bālāś ca duḥkhitā na bhaviṣyanti.

bhavatu. nānveṣyāmi. mama śarīraṃ mārayiṣyāmi. mayi mṛte, vyāghrī mama śarīraṃ khādiṣyati. mayi khādite, sva­bālān na mārayiṣyati. mayi khādite, na mariṣyante vyāghra­bālāḥ.

śiṣye gate, bodhisattvaḥ parvata­gahvare patitvā maraṇaṃ jagāma.

vyāghrī gahvare patitaṃ bodhisattva­śarīraṃ dadarśa. śarīraṃ dṛṣṭvā sukhena tad akhādat. bodhisattva­śarīraṃ ca khāditvā na khāditum iyeṣa sva­bālān.

śiṣyas tu na kiṃcit khādyaṃ dadarśa parvate. sa gahvaraṃ pratyāgatya bodhisattvaṃ na dadarśa. gahvare tu dṛṣṭvā vyāghryā khādyamānaṃ śarīraṃ bodhisattvasya dadarśa śiṣyaḥ.

śiṣyo 'cintayat: adbhutam! adbhutam! adbhutam eva tasya mahatī kṛpā!
